In recent years, Chinatown has broken its traditional boundaries east past Pike Street (Allen Street). Quite a number of the new immigrants are those from Fujian province, China. This is the corner of Henry and Rutgers (south of Essex Street) facing south. Just one block north is East Broadway. The Manhattan Bridge is visible in the background.

Henry Bookbinding.
One day, while photographing the entrance to St. Theresa's Rectory (pictured here) on the corner of Henry, and Rutgers Street, I was hassled by an old, rather fat, white man who demanded to know who I was, what I was doing "taking pictures" of the church. He kept rambling on about how I was "taking pictures" of a church, that it was an institution, and therefore copyright. Hogwash, I tried reasoning with him, but hey, people just want to pick a fight with you. I'm on a public street, and according to the law, copyright protection (which the building is not accorded) does not include the right to prevent someone from photographing a building if they can see it from a public street [FN1].

Incidentally, when I returned a week later to complete a few details, the same wacko again began hassling me on why I was there "taking pictures" of a nearby building called Immigrant Social Services, Inc. It was then I discovered why he was so belligerent. He works at ISS.

Anyway, sorry for the tangent, I just had to rant. I like the red color of this entranceway, the way the vines curl up the sides, the portal's slight disrepair, and the various signs affixed to the doorway including the old fallout shelter sign.
