Confucius Plaza was built in 1975 as a federally subsidized apartment co-op with help from the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. Discrimination in construction hiring (typical practice of most building trades at that time) led to protests at Confucius Plaza. After unrelenting pressure from the community, over two dozen Asian American workers were hired, along with the founding of Asian-Americans For Equality. aafe history.
